2008 Joint Conference Parliament House, Brisbane on 18th & 19th September 2008.

Travelsafe Committee of the Queensland Parliament and the Australasian College of Road Safety                                                                                           Theme: Motivating behaviour change among high risk road users: What works and what doesn't work?

This successful and well attended conference held in partnership with the Travelsafe Committee of the Queensland Parliament encouraged debate on how to;

  • achieve change in high risk behaviours, particularly among persistent offenders including: drink driving, drug driving, unlicensed/disqualified driving and driving at excessive or inappropriate speeds.
  • to motivate behaviour change among high risk road users, including, young drivers. motorcyclists, fatigued drivers, work related drivers, rural and remote road users, older drivers and drink walkers.

The conference organisers wish to acknowledge Queensland Transport, the Motor Accident Insurance Commission, NRMA - ACT Road Safety Trust, Cozart , RACQ and CARRS-Q for their support of the conference, and the support of The Marque Hotel Brisbane in making discounted accommodation rates available to conference attendees. 

ACT Chapter - Book Launch on Driver Distraction

On 12 December the NRMA-ACT Road Safety Trust and the ACT Chapter of the ACRS held a launch of the first book on Driver Distraction by Michael Regan, John D. Lee and Kristie Young. The book provides a practical resource for understanding, preventing and managing driver distraction. Powerpoint presentations from Michael Regan and Kirstie Young. ACT Chapter Seminar -   On-road cycling in Canberra    

29 July 2008 at the  Australian National Botanic Gardens, Theatrette ,  Canberra 12 noon to 1.30 pm  The seminar discussed the policy and practice of on-road cycling in the ACT, the operational and regulatory implications and the effects on road safety.  Presentations were made by Roads ACT, Pedal Power and NRMA, followed by an open discussion session. 

Older Drivers Seminar - Queensland Chapter

The Queensland Chapter with kind sponsorship from CARRS-Q and the NRMA ACT Road Safety Trust held the Older Driver Seminar on Friday 28th March, at Carseldine Campus, Queensland University of Technology, Beams Road Carseldine, Brisbane.

"Safe Walking: A Colloquium on Pedestrian Safety"

This seminar was hosted by the NSW Injury Risk Management Research Centre on Monday 26th November 2007 at the Grace Hotel, Yurra Room, Level 2, 77 York Street, Sydney.

Infants, Children and Young People and Road Safety National Conference

The College, in partnership with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau and assisted by the NSW (Sydney) Chapter Executive,  conducted a conference on "Infants, Children and Young People, and Road Safety",  at the Parliament House Theatrette, Macquarie Street, Sydney on 2-3 August 2007.  This event was sponsored  by NRMA Motoring Services, Safe n Sound and the Motor Accident Authority

The Australasian College of Road Safety’s 2007 conference focused on reflecting the inaugural 2007 UN Global Road Safety Week theme.  Australian and New Zealand youth representatives attended the World Youth Assembly in Geneva in late April 2007, and the outcomes of the Youth Assembly were reported and discussed at the conference.

Full conference proceedings will be available for download on completion of peer reviews.

 

 Older Drivers

The College Office, in collaboration with the College Chapters, is organising seminars on 'Older Drivers' in the State/Territory capitals in 2006-2007.  The first Seminar was held in Canberra on 30 October 2006.  The seminar series is being sponsored by the NRMA-ACT Roaad Safety Trust and features a presentation by Robin Anderson on the findings of his Churchill Fellowship to study community based road safety programs for older drivers in Europe and the USA. 

Other speakers at the Canberra Seminar included:

  • Dr Bella Dinh-Zarr, formerly National Director of Traffic Safety Policy for the American Automobile Association (AAA) where she was the traffic safety spokesperson and lead scientist, developing tools for older drivers such as Roadwise Review and CarFit. 
  • Associate Professor Drew Richardson, the NRMA-ACT Road Safety Trust Chair of Road Trauma and Emergency Medicine at the ANU Medical School. 
  • Jim Langford, Senior Research Fellow at the Monash University  Accident  Research Centre
  • Allan Brownsdon, a consultant to COTA responsible for the development of an “Older Persons Road Safety Needs Analysis” for the ACT.

Recidivist Drink Driving and Unlicensed Driving

The College Office, in collaboration with the College chapters,organised seminars on 'Recidivist Drink Driving and Unlicensed Driving' in some State/Territory capitals during 2005-2006.

Sydney International Conference on 'Driver Distraction

This was held in Sydney on 2/3 June 2005 and was attended by over 100 delegates. All delegates will be sent a free copy of the CD-ROM of the papers and presentations once the peer review process of the papers has been completed - we had hoped to have the CD available by the end of August 2005. However, there has been a delay beyond our control, but we are now in April 2008 inthe process of having CDs produced and will also be available via the web.

1st United Nations Global Road Safety Week 23-29 April 2007

The UN Global Road Safety Week was dedicated to young road users - be they pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, novice drivers or passengers.  For more details visit the WHO website road safety page
