SEMINAR SERIES - 2009 1. Heavy Vehicle Transport Safety and Fatigue Risk Management Workshop
Wednesday 20 May, 2009, The George Institute for International Health
The workshop looked at factors associated with driver fatigue risks in the heavy vehicle industry, including existing knowledge, current research, government policy directions, safety management methods in theory and practice as well as related industry perspectives on the problem. The workshop was chaired by Dr Teresa Senserrick, The George Institute for International Health and attended by approximately 40 people.

SEMINAR SERIES 5 - 2008 1. Getting the Message Across: What can we learn from public health advertising? Thursday 10th July 2008, The George Institute for International Health The seminar was chaired by Dr Sarah Redshaw, 38 people attended. 2. Novice drivers: Influencing the outcomes. Friday 10th October. The George Institute for International Health The seminar was chaired by Associate Professor Rebecca Ivers. Speakers include: 3. Risk Indulgence: Youth Risk Attitudes Thursday 27th November 2008, Macquarie University, North Ryde 4. High level review of road safety management: Sweden - as case study. 21 November, 2008, The George Institute for International Health, George Street. The seminar was chaired by Mr Ian Faulks. The speaker, Jeanne Breen, was a part of a 2007, a review team together with Eric Howard and Tony Bliss who completed a review of road safety management in Sweden, using the World Bank assessment framework, and examined the next steps to Vision Zero. This lecture completes a series of three presentations during Jeanne Breen's visit to Australia, the previous two lectures (in Perth and Adelaide) addressing issues in safe systems approach to road safety and road safety management. Attendance: 26. 5. Safe System and Ambitious Road Safety Targets: Where does New South Wales sit on the world road safety stage? Speakers: Dr Soames Job and Professor Raph Griezbieta. - Attendance: approximately 30. Dr Job described the back ground to the Safe Systems approach to road safety and how this is being implemented in NSW with illustration by a number of specific examples. Professor Griezbieta spoke about the safer roads aspects of the safe systems approach with specific reference to key developments in engineering. This seminar is to be repeated as a national program to promote understanding of the safe systems approach to road safety professionals in each State and Territory. SEMINAR SERIES 4 - 2007 1. Road Safety and Planning In Transport and Urban Design Friday 23 February 2007, Parliament House, Sydney -(Attendance: 36) The seminar was chaired by Liz de Rome, The George Institute for International Health. Program: 2. Current Australian Initiatives In International Road Safety Friday 2 April 2007 at the Darlington Centre, City Road, University of Sydney. The inaugural UN Global Road Safety Week was held in late April 2007. To mark the occasion, the Chapter, in partnership with the George Institute for International Health, held a seminar on current Australian initiatives in international road safety. Program: The seminar was chaired by Dr Rebecca Ivers, The George Institute for International Health, University of Sydney. The seminar attracted the interest of media outlets, with Professor Stevenson being interviewed by BBC World Service on the China seatbelt study. Darlington Centre, City Road, Darlington (Attendance: 40) 3. Road Safety For Infants, Children And Young People Conference 2 - 3 August 2007, Parliament House, Sydney Attendance : Over 100 delegates and 43 speakers on a diversity of topics on road safety for infants, children and young people. The conference formed part of the Australian contribution to the inaugural UN Global Road Safety Week and was supported by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. In addition to the MAA, the conference was also sponsored by NRMA Motoring & Services, with additional sponsorships from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, NRMA-ACT Road Safety Trust and Britax (Safe-n-Sound), The conference attracted considerable interest by media outlets, with Hon. Jim Lloyd MHR, Federal Minister for Roads and the Hon. Eric Roozendaal MLC, NSW Minister for Roads, being interviewed on road safety topics, particularly safety of children on school buses. Amongst others, Ms Nerida Leal was interviewed on street racing and car hoons. Dr Julia Irwin and Dr Eugene Chekaluk were interviewed on young drivers, gender, passengers, and driver distraction. Older Drivers: Safety And Mobility Planning For The Future Wednesday, 3 October 2007, Parliament House, Sydney The seminar was chaired by Professor Mark Stevenson and attended by 40 people. The seminar was a part of a national program which coincided with, and provided an opportunity to promote informed discussion in relation to, the Roads and Traffic Authority discussion paper on older driver licensing and testing. Program: 5. Motorcycle Safety: Improving The Odds Thursday 1 November 2007, George Institute for International Health, Kent Street, Sydney. A seminar on improving our understanding of motorcycle safety issues through motorcycle crash investigation and data analysis was held on Thursday 1 November 2007. The seminar was timed to coincide with Motorcycle Awareness Week. The seminar was chaired by Mr Guy Stanford, Chairman, Motorcycle Council of NSW and attended by 35 people. The program included three presentations: This seminar was reported in the national motorcycle magazine Two Wheels, in a nine page article for riders on how to avoid crashing, which was based on the information presented. SEMINAR SERIES 3 - 2006 1. Repeat Drink Driving Offenders And Unlicensed Drivers, Friday 10 February 2006 Included an overview of recidivist drink drivers, an overview of unlicensed drivers, a review of potential counter measures, current NSW policing initiatives, what works in the treatment of problems with alcohol, and, the minimum purchasing age for alcohol and traffic crash injury. The seminar was chaired by Professor Mark Stevenson, Chapter Chair. 2. Road Safety: From Local To Global Perspectives, Tuesday 4 April 2006 The keynote speaker was Mr David Ward, of the FIA Foundation for the Automobile and Society, on global road safety. Other presentations discussed the China seatbelt intervention and working with government to implement change, AusRAP and safer roads, the need for safer road infrastructure, road freight as an overlooked aspect of road use, key performance indicators relating to road safety, ANCAP and Australian vehicle standards, the DROP (Dynamic Roll Over Protection) research program, and a review of currently unexploited injury and crash reduction opportunities. The seminar was chaired by Ian Faulks, representing the STAYSAFE Committee. 3. Parents & Young Drivers - Improving the Odds Friday 30 June 2006, The George Institute for International Health, Missenden Road, Camperdow. The seminar was chaired by Liz de Rome, LdeR Consulting. It was attended by approximately 70 people. 4. Children and Road Safety: A Seminar for Road Safety Professionals Friday 1st December 2006, Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney, Chaired by Liz de Rome, it was attended by approximately 30 people. SEMINAR SERIES 2 - 2005 1. Seminar on vehicle and road safety, "road safety ... the future: Technology and injury prevention", Tuesday 8 March 2005, Parliament House, Sydney The seminar featured as keynote speaker: Dr Jean-Yves Le Coz, head of road safety policy at Renault, and coincided with the Australian Grand Prix held in Melbourne. French passenger vehicles are the first in the world to feature driver-selected speed limiters as production standard. Presentations included: Renault's integrated approach to road safety, vehicle technology and injury prevention to improve road safety, the NSW Institute of Trauma and Injury Management (ITIM), vehicle rollovers and road trauma, and, Vision Zero and designing vehicles to prevent catastrophic road injury and deaths. The seminar was co-chaired by the Hon. John Murray, representing the Australian France Association for Science and Technology, and Ian Faulks, representing the STAYSAFECommittee. 2. Street Furniture: "Branding An Urban Identity", Thursday 21 April 2005 The keynote presentation on road safety, traffic management and street furniture and design was given by Mr John Jamieson, of Jamieson Foley Pty Ltd. Other presentations on various aspects of urban roads management and street furniture, including street furniture in Paris, City of Sydney street furniture and urban advertising, City of Sydney street furniture and the reshaping of urban identity, the design of street furniture, the role of street furniture in recycling and environmental management, landscape architecture and street furniture, and, street furniture in the City of Melbourne. The seminar was co-chaired by the Hon. John Murray, representing the Australian France Association for Science and Technology, and Ian Faulks, representing the STAYSAFE Committee. 3. Older Driver Licensing, Thursday 5 May 2005 Presentations included: The NSW Office of Ageing, ageing policy, and older drivers, older drivers in New South Wales, older driver licensing issues in New Zealand, issues in vision, ageing and driving, neurological disorders and the older driver, and, the "DRIVE", Senior Driver Awareness Program. The seminar was chaired by Ian Faulks, representing the STAYSAFE Committee. Following the seminar, a number of attendees also participated in a workshop to examine proposals for changes to the New Zealand driver licensing system concerning older drivers. 4. International Conference On Driver Distraction, Thursday 2 June 2005 and Friday 3 June 2005 This was first major international conference to examine driver distraction. The conference was chaired by Ian Faulks, representing the STAYSAFE Committee. Over 120 delegates heard from more than 25 speakers on a diversity of topics in driver distraction. 5. YOUNG DRIVERS AT RISK, Friday 2 December 2005 Featured presentations on the findings from the Transforming Drivers project, and the development and launch of the 'Arrive Alive' website.
